World War II: Haruna Launched at Kobe
December 14, 1913 - The Japanese battleship Haruna (right) is launched.? Designed in response to the British introduction of the battlecruiser? in 1908, the Japanese Kongo -class battlecruiser mounted eight 14-in. guns.? The fourth and final ship of the class, Haruna , was launched at Kobe in December 1913.? Joining the fleet, it saw some service during World War I until being placed in reserve.? Upgraded in the mid-1920s to a battleship, Haruna was further altered a decade later and as re-classified as a fast battleship.? With the beginning of World?War II ,? Haruna aided in the invasions of Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Dutch?East Indies.? A workhorse for the Imperial Japanese Navy, it took part in the Indian Ocean Raid in April 1942 before escorting Japanese carriers during the Battle of Midway two months later.? Ordered south to Truk,? Haruna fought in the Guadalcanal Campaign and?conducted a devastating bombardment of Henderson Field?in October.? Though largely inactive in 1943,?the battleship saw extensive combat in 1944 as it?was present at the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf .? Returning to Japan for repairs late that year,? Haruna was sunk by American air strikes on July 28, 1945. World War II: von Rundstedt Born
December 12, 1875 - Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt (right) is born at Aschersleben, Germany.? Entering the German Army in 1892, von Rundstedt saw extensive service during World War I .? Remaining in the army after the conflict, he rapidly rose through the ranks and was one of its senior officers in the years prior to World War II .? With the outbreak of the conflict in September 1939,?von Rundstedt led the main assault into Poland.??Turning west the following year, his?troops were instrumental in winning the Battle of?France.? After aiding in the planning for Operation Sea Lion , von Rundstedt was ordered east to lead Army Group?South during the invasion of the Soviet Union.? During the opening weeks of the campaign, his forces won a massive victory at Kiev before driving on Kharkov and Rostov.? Removed from command that November for disobeying Hitler, he became the commander of German troops in the West?in March 1942.? He remained in this role?through the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944.? Though removed?in July for stating that Germany should make?peace,?he returned to lead German troops in September.? Containing Allied gains during Operation Market-Garden , von Rundstedt later opposed the German plan for the Battle of the Bulge .? Relieved again in March 1945, he was captured by Allied troops on May 1.? Though charged with war crimes, he was never tried?due to his age and failing health. ???????
