Roman Empire: Battle of Milvian Bridge

October 28, 312 - At the Battle of the Milvian Bridge (left) north of Rome, the forces of Constantine crush the army of Maxentius. Fought during the power struggle that occurred following the collapse of the Tetrarchy, the Battle of the Milvian Bridge pitted Constantine against the usurper Maxentius. American Revolution: Washington Takes Command

June 15, 1775 - Gen. George Washington (right) is appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.? Few figures dominate 18th century American History like George Washington.? Born in 1732, he played a key role in the opening engagements of the French & Indian War which ultimately saw Britain gain control of most of North America.? Two decades later, he took command of the fledgling Continental Army during the opening months of the American Revolution .? American Civil War: Grant Born

April 27, 1822 - Gen. Ulysses S. Grant (right) is born at Point Pleasant, OH.? Graduating from West Point in 1843, Grant was a middling student and was assigned to the 4th US Infantry as a quartermaster.? Seeing extensive action during the Mexican-American War , he was twice brevetted for gallantry.? Leaving the army in 1854 under a cloud of rumors related to drinking, he proved a failure in civilian life.? With the beginning of the Civil War , he returned to the military and quickly rose through the ranks.? A brigadier general by July 1861, he first gained notoriety after winning victories at Forts Henry and Donelson .? Taken by surprise at Shiloh in April 1862, he recovered to win a clear victory.? Tasked with taking the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg later that year, he was initially stymied before developing an effective plan in the spring of 1863.? Cutting loose from his supply lines, he moved south of the city and in a brilliant campaign crossed the Mississippi, won several battles, captured Jackson, MS, and invested Vicksburg.? After a several week siege , the city fell on July 4.??Given command of all Union forces in the West that fall, he raised the siege of Chattanooga and routed Confederate forces ?that November.? American Civil War: Rosecrans Born
